There is a diversity of research interests within the Power Networks CDT which reflects the multi-faceted nature of the subject.

The Power Networks CDT will develop graduates into highly trained engineers, scientists, economists and regulators with the skills to engage in research, design and development that will drive UK innovation and prosperity.

Through the programme, students are able to focus upon their specialist research interest, while developing a holistic understanding of power networks.

This is the result of engaging with the knowledge expertise of both The University of Manchester and the industrial partners of the CDT, interacting with other students within the CDT, and undertaking additional contextual training.

As part of the 4-year programme, students spend their first year in a taught programme – this allows them to develop an understanding of the technical, cultural and financial context of Power Networks, position their PhD research in the context of the broader energy system, and undertake diverse training opportunities.

Our students will graduate not only as an expert in their research niche, but also with a broad skill set developed from varied training activities, a wider understanding of the many problems faced in the power sector, and a network built with colleagues that will last for life.
