Research

Never before has there been a greater need for research into renewable energy and low-carbon technology.

Students have access to leading facilities like the High Voltage Laboratory.

Power networks are at the heart of the UK’s need to reduce the carbon intensity of energy, irrespective of whether it is used for power, light, heat or transport.

The Centre's research is targeted at developing the Power Network solutions necessary to enable our transition to a low carbon energy future.

To achieve this, power networks need to evolve in terms of the sources and types of power generation, the business models, regulatory regimes and the ways in which users interact with the network to consume energy.

To address these massive challenges, research within the Centre is organised into four broad themes:

  • Changes to the pattern of energy demands and their effect on the power network
  • Cross-cutting technologies
  • Electrical power network design, operation and management
  • Power network operation, planning and governance
